Just one of many families who potentially stand to lose their homes along the Yangtze River in Central China. More than 160 kilometers (100 mi.) away, at Sandouping on the Yangtze River, work has almost concluded on China's biggest construction project since the Great Wall--Three Gorges Dam. Named for the series of canyons that it would flood, the dam is designed to create a reservoir 760 kilometers (400 mi.) long. The lake will drown the gorges and inundate hundreds of side valleys, including the one in which this family has lived along with thousands of others since before the Ming Dynasty, which began in 1368. An estimated 1.5 million people will be displaced due to the flooding of the Three Gorges.
